Gross! We eat more lippy than we realise, and there’s some nasty stuff in there.
Oprah’s favourite doctor – Dr Oz – has revealed that the average woman will use (and consume) about 3kg of lip products (balm, gloss, lipstick) every 10 years.
The amount of lippy you actually consume over a lifetime is up for debate, but something that is not up for debate is that whatever you put on your lips you eat.
Why go to the effort making healthy food choices when one lick of your lips can undo all your good work. Here is an ingredient list from a major lipstick brand:
There are over 25 listed ingredients and none of them sound tasty. The scarier thing is that the colour ingredients (e.g. Red 6 Lake) can have some hidden ingredients such as lead and arsenic. The American Food and Drug Administration did a study on lipsticks. They found trace amounts of lead in 400 lipsticks including ones from L’Oreal, Covergirl and Revlon. Are trace amounts of lead acceptable in your book when it can affect your health?
But what about lip balms?
Lip balms have their own concerns, especially if they are based on petroleum jelly (mineral oil). Refined crude oil is something I don’t want on my skin let alone in my stomach. Petroleum Jelly can contain hydrocarbons, and according to Dr Oz women with breast cancer have twice the level of hydrocarbons in their breasts than women without breast cancer.
That fact definitely raises a lot of questions especially since some believe that hydrocarbons are removed during the mineral oil refining process. Instead of wasting time and energy arguing it’s easier to just choose a better product without the question marks.
There are some good products out there and we want to join them. So we have been quietly making some organic lip balms (sorry no lip sticks).
